ST. LOUIS, Mo. — For the second week in a row and the fourth time this season, Southern Illinois junior center Kavion Pippen has earned the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week award, the league announced on Monday.
A 6-foot-10, 240-pound junior college transfer, Pippen led the Salukis in scoring in a win over Bradley and a loss at Illinois State. For the week, he averaged 17.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and 2.0 blocks, while making 16-of-24 (.667) shots from the field. Against the Braves, he was 10-for-12 from the field with 21 points, marking his fifth-straight game in double figures.
Earlier this season, Pippen won Newcomer of the Week after the Salukis beat SIUE and San Jose State, plus the opening-weekend victory at Winthrop. He also won the award on Feb. 5 after helping the team to wins over Drake and Valparaiso. The nephew of NBA legend Scottie Pippen is second on the team in scoring (12.6), and first in field goal attempts (273), field goal percentage (.560) and blocked shots (37). He has scored in double figures in all but six games.
