Nicole Martin named MVC Player of the Week

ST. LOUIS — Southern Illinois sophomore forward Nicole Martin was named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday.
Southern Illinois sophomore Nicole Martin averaged 23.0 points on 62.5% (20-for-32) shooting from the field in SIU's two road games over the weekend. She opened the weekend by pouring in 24 points on 11-of-15 shooting at Drake on Friday night, and followed with a game-high 22 points to go along with three blocks, three rebounds and two steals at Northern Iowa on Sunday.
The back-to-back 20-plus point outputs marked the first time that the Jefferson City, Mo. native has reached 20-plus points in consecutive games in her career and she has now reached double figures in eight-straight games.
This is the second time this season that a Saluki has claimed Player of the Week honors. Abby Brockmeyer was named MVC Player and Newcomer of the Week after SIU swept Evansville and Indiana State to open Valley on Jan. 2.
The Salukis (12-10, 7-4 MVC) return to the SIU Arena on Friday, Feb. 9 when they host the Illinois State Redbirds. Tip-off for Southern's Pink Out Game is set for 6 p.m.
