Women’s Basketball's rally falls short in loss to Illinois State

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois women's basketball team showed resilience in fighting back from a nine-point third quarter deficit Friday night, but Illinois State squeaked out a 39-36 win over the Salukis inside SIU Arena.
"I thought we played really good defense today," fifth-year head coach Cindy Stein said. "If we played that kind of defense in practice, we would shoot better against a defense like that. So that is what we are going to take out of this game and work on. We still have a lot of season left."
The Salukis (12-11, 7-5 MVC) found themselves down nine points with 3:24 to play in the third quarter, but Southern went on a furious 15-3 run over the next 5:18 to take their first lead of the second half, 35-32 with 8:06 to play in regulation.
Both teams went scoreless over the next four minutes before a Hannah Green three-pointer tied the game, 35-35. After Nicole Martin made one of two free throws to give Southern a 36-35 advantage, Illinois State's Simone Good scored the game's final four points to seal the win.
The Salukis had one of their best defensive efforts of the season. SIU forced a season-high 28 turnovers and tallied 12 steals, which marked the eighth time this season that Southern has notched 10-plus steals in a game. SIU also held Illinois State to 30.3% (10-of-33) shooting from the floor and 30.0% (3-of-10) from three-point range.
Southern was undone by its own offensive struggles. SIU shot 23.3% (14-of-60) from the field and made just 4-of-10 (40%) from the free throw line on a night in which its leading scorer and reigning MVC Player of the Week, Nicole Martin, fouled out with four points in 13 minutes.
"I'm most disappointed in how we shot at the free throw line," Stein said. "If we made our free throws tonight, we win the game and we were in a position to do that. We just didn't get it done."
Kylie Giebelhausen and Kristen Nelson each had eight points to lead the Salukis in scoring while Abby Brockmeyer finished with four points, eight rebounds and three blocks.
The Salukis return to the SIU Arena on Sunday, Feb. 11 when they host the Bradley Braves. Tip-off is set for 11:30 a.m.
