Omaha, Neb. - Southern Illinois University Carbondale (12-19, 6-8 MVC) allowed 29 runs and 31 hits during two losses to Creighton University (12-16, 5-9 MVC) in a Saturday doubleheader at the Creighton Sports Complex.
"We swung the bats well enough to win, but unfortunately our pitching was so poor that they couldn't keep us in the game, especially in game one and that set the tone for the day," said Dan Callahan, Saluki head coach.
"I'm very discouraged, we wanted to win three or four games this weekend and we have to change our goals. We didn't do enough things well enough to win. If we find a way to win two games and split this series that will be a good weekend after the way things went here today. I'll take that right now."
Despite hitting .436 (17-for-39) the Salukis lost game one 15-12 in a shoot-out due to a record tying seven home runs in a game by Creighton. SIU lost game two 14-4 in eight innings due to the MVC ten-run rule in game two of a doubleheader.
In the game one with SIU leading 6-1, the Bluejays scored seven times to take an 8-6 lead. The Salukis scored five runs to retake the lead 11-8 before Creighton scored seven more unanswered runs to take a 15-11 lead and win 15-12.
Justin Maurath lead SIU with a 4-for-5 game, including two triples, a double, two-RBI, and three runs scored. Luke Nelson (2-for-4, two-RBI, run), Scott Hankey (2-for-4, three runs), Greg Andrews (2-for-4, two runs), Roman Schooley (2-for-5, three-RBIs), Cory Newman (2-for-5, two doubles, run) and Jeff Stanek (1-for-2, three-RBIs, double, run) had strong games for the Salukis.
Bluejay reliever Joe Humay (1-0) earned the game one win with two innings of work while SIU's Jerel Deitering (1-3) gave up five runs in one and two third innings to suffer the loss.
In game two, SIU took a 1-0 lead before Creighton scored eight straight runs to take an 8-1 lead. The dawgs scored three runs in the seventh to cut the lead to 8-4 but allowed five runs in the bottom of the inning and the Bluejays went on to the 14-4 win.
Hankey (2-for-4, double, RBI, run) and Maurath (1-for-3, home run, two-RBIs, run) led the Salukis in game two.
Creighton's Tom Oldham (2-1) pitched all eight innings for the Bluejay win. SIU?s Ryan Aird took the loss, allowing six runs on nine hits in four and one third innings.
The Salukis will wrap up the four game series with an 11 a.m. doubleheader against the Bluejays on Sunday, April 8 at the Creighton Sports Complex.
