CARBONDALE, Ill. - Following an impressive 3-1 win over Wyoming to end the 25th Saluki Silkworm Invitational last Saturday, Southern Illinois (2-4) looks to win its second straight match over rival Southeast Missouri State (0-8) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Davies Gym.
The Salukis will be looking for their first back-to-back wins of the year against the winless Othakians. Despite SEMO's record, SIU head coach Sonya Locke expects a tough match.
"It doesn't matter what their record is, SEMO always plays us tough and has a good program. We can't afford to overlook them or anyone else if we want to win matches this season. They'll be hungry to get their first win of the year and I expect a dogfight."
The Salukis will look to big hitters Marissa Washington (.350 hitting percentage, 3rd in MVC), Haley Hann (.323, 8th in MVC) and Ashley Saverine (team-high 44 kills & 3.38 kpg last weekend) offensively. Setter Holly Marita (10.83 assists per game) is seventh in the Valley and libero Erica Miller ranks fourth in the MVC with 4.39 digs per game on defense.
As a team, SIU is fourth in the MVC with a .225 hitting percentage, while SEMO is hitting just .169 for the year. Southern has held its opponents to a .189 hitting percentage, while Southeast Missouri has allowed teams to hit .240.
SEMO opened the season by the first two game in a 3-2 loss to SMS, but has lost 24 games and eight matches since, including 3-0 losses in their last seven matches. Jessica Koeper leads the Othakians with 86 kills and 99 digs.
Tickets can be purchased by adults for $4 and high school students and younger for $3. For more information, please call the SIU Ticket Office at (618) 453-2000.
