ST. LOUIS -- Sophomore pole vault champion and Elite 18 winner Nathan Schuck has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week, the Valley announced Wednesday.
A walk-on and native of Fishers, Ind., Schuck won the MVC pole vault crown to help catapult the Saluki men to their first outdoor conference team title since 1992 on Sunday. He obliterated his previous career best by one foot en route to clearing 5.19m (17-00.25) for the win, the sixth-best height in school history that also puts Schuck in contention for the NCAA West Regional in 45th place. Schuck became the first Saluki to win the outdoor pole vault crown since Cody Doerflein in 2012.
Schuck also earned the outdoor edition of the MVC Elite 18 award, given to the highest all-conference finisher with the highest GPA. He currently maintains a 3.92 GPA in criminology and criminal justice.
To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.
Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
