Kern breaks school record at Indiana Relays

Kern broke Josh Freeman's school record in the shot put Friday night.
Jared Kern broke Josh Freeman's school record in the shot put with a lifetime-best mark of 65'-5.50" (19.95m) Friday night at the Indiana Relays.

With the throw, Kern ranks 2nd in the nation in the shot put. The top 16 in the country advance to the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field National Championships in March.

The Harlem, Ill. native had three throws of 65' or further Friday night, becoming the first Saluki to surpass 65' feet indoors. He launched his third attempt 65'-2" (19.86m), and after a foul on his fourth attempt, set the record on his fifth toss. He nearly replicated his record breaking effort on his sixth, and final, throw with a heave that measured 65'-4" (19.91m).

Kern was one of four current Salukis to place in the top-eight of the shot put, while Freeman took second in the event. Kyle Kling set a new personal best with a throw of 56'-8.50" (17.28m) to finish fifth, while Ricky Hurley also set a PR with a toss of 54'-8" (16.66m) to place sixth. Isaac Ingram was the fourth Saluki to set a lifetime-best at the Indiana Relays, as he threw 53'-11" (16.43m) to take eighth.

On the track, Tyjuana Eason qualified for Saturday's 60m dash finals after she ran 7.76 in the prelims Friday. The Kankakee, Ill. native also placed third in the 200m dash with a mark of 24.74.

Warren Hazel added to Southern's top-5 finishes with a third-place showing in the 200m. The Old Roads, St. Kitts native clocked a personal-best time of 21.46 and in doing so, moves up to third on SIU's top-10 list.

Luca-Anna Palasti took fifth in the 600m, as she ran a season-best 1:35.45. Fellow newcomer Nikki Freeman set a PR in the shot with a toss of 46'-5.50" (14.16m).Â

Over at the pole vault, Chase Black cleared 16'-0.75" (4.90m) for the first time in his career to finish fourth while Nathan Schuck finished fifth with a clearance of 15'-7" (4.75m).

In the long jump, Franklin Adams leaped 23'-6" (7.16m) to place third, while Kyle Landon cleared 22'-11.25" (6.99m) to place fifth.

The Salukis conclude competition at the Indiana Relays tomorrow beginning at 10 a.m. with the women's weight throw. Track events begin at 11:20 a.m.Â
