Jack Hartman served as the head basketball coach at Southern Illinois University from 1962 to 1970, achieving significant success. Over eight seasons, he compiled a commendable record of 144 wins and 64 losses. A highlight of his career at SIU was leading the Salukis to a 24-2 record and securing the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) championship in 1967. During that championship season, Hartman coached notable players such as Walt Frazier and Dick Garrett. He retired from coaching in 1986 with a career record of 439-233 in 24 years.
