James Phillips

James Phillips (1977-80) played defensive line for the Salukis and still remains the all-time career leader in sacks (23.5). He was a three-time First-Team All-MVC selection (1978, 1979, 1980). He was so dominant that despite missed six games in 1979 with a knee injury, he was still named All-Conference. Phillips recorded 221 career tackles, which ranks 29th all-time at Southern. During his sophomore and junior seasons, SIU was a combined 15-7 and finished second in the MVC in 1979.
