Terre Haute, Ind. - Southern Illinois University Carbondale (11-15-1, 5-5 MVC) allowed two unearned runs in the final inning giving Indiana State University (11-13, 2-7 MVC) a 6-5 win in game one of their Missouri Valley Conference doubleheader on Saturday, March 31, at Sycamore Field.
"We have to play much better with the lead. After a great comeback with four runs, we gave them a win in their last at bat with two errors when we had a chance to win the game," said Dan Callahan, Saluki head coach.
Trailing 4-1 in the top of the seventh, the Salukis scored four runs to take a 5-4 lead. With the bases loaded, Roman Schooley singled to drive in a run. Justin Maurath grounded to third to drive in another run. Jeff Stanek singled on an 0-2 pitch to drive in two runs and take a 5-4 lead into the final half inning.
The Salukis committed a fielding error which allowed a single to tie the game at 5-5. After Scott Lucht (3-1) committed a throwing error, he allowed a single which drove in the game winning run for the Sycamores.
Scott Lucht pitched one and two third innings. He allowed two runs on three hits with a strikeout and a walk to suffer his first loss of the year.
Scott Hankey (3-for-4, RBI), Luke Nelson (2-for-3, run scored), Justin Maurath (2-for-4, double, RBI) and Ryan Murray (1-for-2, two walks, two runs scored) led SIU.
Sycamore closer Mike Scott (2-0) picked up the victory after giving up the four Saluki runs in the top of the seventh.
Game two of the doubleheader was suspended due to a rainstorm in the eighth inning with SIU trailing 12-6. The game will be completed at 12 p.m. on Sunday, April 1 prior to the 1 p.m. series finale.
