SIU Splits With Creighton, Drops Series 3-1

Omaha, Neb. - Southern Illinois University Carbondale (13-20, 7-9 MVC) split the final two games of its series with Creighton University (13-17, 6-10 MVC) in a Sunday doubleheader at the Creighton Sports Complex. SIU finished the series with a 1-3 record.
The Salukis lost game one 2-1. Roman Schooley's fifth home run was SIU's only hit and run of the game. Bill Clayton (2-3) threw his best game of the year allowing just four hits and two runs in six innings in the loss. He struck out three ans walked four.
Creighton's Cory Slining (2-3) threw the one hitter to earn the victory. Slining struck out three and walked four also.
SIU came back in game two with a devastating hitting attack. The Salukis had 20 hits (20-for-43) in the 13-4 win.
Ryan Murray hit his first home run at SIU and Justin Maurath hit a three run shot to take a quick 4-0 lead in the first inning. Creighton responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning but could never get closer than a run as SIU outscored the Bluejays 9-1 the rest of the way.
Justin Maurath lead SIU once again with a 3-for-6 game, including a home run, double, six-RBI, and a run scored. Scott Hankey (3-for-5, double, run, RBI), Ryan Murray (3-for-4, home run, three-RBI, two runs), Luke Nelson (3-for-4, two-RBI, two runs), Greg Andrews (2-for-4, two runs), Cory Newman (2-for-4, double, three runs), and Roman Schooley (2-for-5, home run, RBI, run) each performed well at the plate for the Salukis.
Chad McCann (1-0) started and won his first game at SIU with seven innings of work. McCann struck out seven and only walked one while allowing four runs on eight hits.
Creighton's Joe Humay (1-1) suffered the loss after allowing four runs and only getting one out in the first inning before he was removed.
The Salukis will host Illinois State University for a four game series on April 13-15 at Abe Martin Field.
