Carbondale, IL. - Southern Illinois University Carbondale (19-36, 10-21 MVC) lost its season finale 4-2 to the University of Tennessee-Martin (8-46, 3-19 OVC) thanks to a two-hit pitching performance by Skyhawk pitcher Brad Meadows on Sunday, May 13 at Abe Martin Field.
Meadows (4-7) threw a complete game allowing just two SIU hits for his fourth win, which is half of the Skyhawks eight wins this season.
Tennessee-Martin jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning and Meadows held SIU hitless until Justin Maurath singled in the fifth to lead off the inning. Sal Frisella walked and Greg Andrews sacrificed Maurath to third and Frisella to second. Scott Hankey singled to drive in Maurath and Frisella cutting the lead to 3-2. The two hits and two runs were all the Salukis could manage against Meadows all day.
Tennessee-Martin added a run in the top of the ninth for a 4-2 lead but didn't need the cushion because SIU never threatened after the fifth inning.
Meadows struck out nine, walked five and allowed two earned runs and two hits to get the win for UTM.
Chad McCann (2-2) suffered the loss for SIU. He allowed just six hits and four earned runs, struck out six batters and walked one in eight innings.
Scott Hankey (1-for-3, two RBIs) led SIU at the plate.
The Salukis complete their season with 19 wins and 36 losses overall and were 10-21 in MVC play. SIU did not advance to the MVC Tournament for the fourth time in Dan Callahan's seven years after finishing eighth in league play during the 2001 season.
