CARBONDALE, Ill.-- Southern Illinois University's women's basketball team has one final tune-up before the start of its 2003-04 season Friday when it hosts NWBL. The exhibition matchup tips off at 7:05 p.m.
SIU enters Friday's game coming off a 64-62 come-from-behind win over St. Louis Goldstar last Sunday. After trailing by nine points at intermission, junior transfer Daphney Desamours scored four points, including a game-tying three-pointer in the last 58 seconds to help the Salukis to victory.
Fifth-year senior Katie Berwanger also had a solid outing for the Dawgs last week. A native of Lake Zurich, Ill., Berwanger posted a double-double 12 points and 15 rebounds. However, senior Tiffany Crutcher led all SIU scorers with 14 points on 4-of-6 from the field and 6-of-8 from the free throw line.
Former Saluki O'Desha Proctor (1995-99) visits SIU Arena as a member of NWBL. While at SIU, Proctor averaged 6.8 points and 3.7 rebounds in 101 games. She also shot .694 (120-of-173) from the free throw line, dished out 179 assists and collected 121 steals.
Following Friday's game, SIU officially opens its 2003-04 season on Friday, Nov. 21 at Southeast Missouri State (6 p.m.).
