DeLAND, Fla. - Kristy Brown registered a double-double 19 points and 12 rebounds to lead Stetson University (2-5) to a 63-55 win over Southern Illinois (2-7) earlier tonight at the Edmunds Center.
Tonight's meeting was the first-ever between the two teams, as SIU concluded the non-conference portion of its schedule.
Although SIU turned the ball over 13 times in the first half, the Salukis traded baskets with the Hatters en route to a 11-11 tie.
However, shortly after a Danette Jones free throw (12:46), Stetson used a 5-0 run to take a 16-11 lead.
SIU answered the rally with a Wendy Goodman bucket and a Elyse Morris stick back to pull to within one (16-15) at the 8:31 mark. Morris initially missed a three-pointer, but grabbed her own rebound to bank in a layup.
SIU would then go scoreless for 3:39, while Stetson built a 10-2 run to take a 26-17 advantage. Brown heated up for six consecutive points in 2:18 to cap off the attack.
Brown would keep getting baskets here and there, and as a result, scored five more points to help lift the Hatters to a 27-21 lead at the break.
Stetson outrebounded SIU, 22-15, in the first half, including 12-5 on the offensive end.
Brown continued to go at the Salukis early in the second half, where her four points, along with five others from Nefertiti Walker helped lift the Hatters to a 43-32 lead (13:47).
Not at all bothered by the deficit, the Salukis came right back with a 13-3 run ignited by Daphney Desamours' five points. Once Elyse Morris split a pair of free throws to end the run, SIU only trailed by one, 46-45, with just under nine minutes left.
But, thanks to the Brown and Walker, Stetson outscored SIU 17-11 in the final nine minutes to post the 63-55 win.
SIU was outrebounded, 41-31, mainly because its three post players had three or more fouls. Goodman had three, and both Bernettra Grayer and Bruster each had four.
Desamours also fouled out, as the Salukis finished the game with 20 hacks.
Additionally, the Salukis had 17 turnovers and shot 40 percent (20-of-50) from the field.
Individually, Desamours registered her ninth straight game scoring double-digits. She scored 16 points, including 12 in the second half.
The Miami, Fla., native also shot 50 percent (6-of-12) from the field and 4-of-5 from the free throw line, while grabbing six rebounds and dishing out four assists.
Amy Hayden followed with 10 points.
Meanwhile, Brown shot 6-of-13 from the field and 7-of-9 from the free throw line to pace Stetson. Janene Maclin followed with 16 points, while Walker rounded out the Hatters' top-three with 11.
Stetson held a 22-12 edge on the offensive glass.
SIU breaks until Dec. 31, where it opens up Missouri Valley Conference action at home against Creighton. Tip off is at 6:05 p.m.
