Women's Basketball Falls to UNI, 72-43

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The Southern Illinois women's basketball team fell to Northern Iowa 72-43 Thursday night in front of 500 fans in the Panther's West Gym. The loss drops the Salukis to 3-18 overall and 1-11 in the MVC. The Panthers climb to 14-8, 8-3 in the MVC.
The Saluki offense was held to a season-low 30 percent from the field, including 0-2 from behind the arc, while the Panthers shot 47 percent in the Missouri Valley Conference contest.
Senior guard Daphney Desamours led the Salukis with 12 points and four rebounds, while Elyse Morris added eight points and four boards.
Southern was within two points (10-8) with two free throws by India Brewster with 15:30 left in the first half before the Panthers scored fifteen unanswered points in six minutes to go up 25-8.
UNI capitalized on SIU mishaps, scoring 30 points off of Saluki turnovers, with 22 in the first half. The Panthers went into the locker room at half time leading 38-22.
The Dawgs couldn't regain their composure as Northern Iowa pulled away in the second half to lead by as many as 31.
The Panther's defense forced 20 turnovers and held the Salukis' leading scorer Danette Jones to seven points. The senior guard was scoreless in the first half.
Northern Iowa's depth was apparent, posting 13 players in the scoring column, led by Alex Cook who paced the Panthers with a game-high 18 points and seven rebounds.
The Salukis travel to Bradley Saturday when they take on the Braves in Peoria at the Robertson Field House at 2:05 p.m.
