CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois senior Ryan Kernes, a tight end on the football team, has been awarded the 2010 Dean Kenneth E. Tempelmeyer Outstanding Student Leadership Award.
This award recognizes a student in the SIUC College of Engineering who has demonstrated an extraordinary record of academic performance and leadership to the student body. The presentation of the Tempelmeyer award will be made at the Annual Engineering Banquet on Wednesday, Feb. 17.
Kernes has managed to maintain a perfect 4.0 grade point average and led the College's Steel Bridge Team while simultaneously being a leader on the football field and playing key community service roles.
Kernes wrapped up his Saluki career by leading SIU into the playoffs for the seventh-straight season and he helped guide the Dawgs to the No. 1 national ranking by the Sports Network. Kernes received three all-conference honors in his time with the Salukis. He was a two-time ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District selection and is one of only four players in program history able to make that claim.
