SCOUTING MURRAY STATE
The Racers enter the matchup on a seven-game losing streak after winning their first two games of the season. Most recently, Murray State fell 71-25 at Purdue, the Salukis' next opponent. The Racers were picked sixth in the preseason Ohio Valley Conference poll. Kayla Low leads Murray State in scoring early in the season, carrying an average of 12.6 points per game to go along with an average of 6 rebounds. Also for the Racers, Mariah Robinson averages 11.0 points and 6.1 rebounds while Jessica Winfrey averages 9.1 points and 7.4 boards.
SERIES WITH MURRAY STATE
SIU leads the all-time series between the two teams 33-4, including a 76-71 overtime victory over the Racers last season in Carbondale.
OVC ALL OVER AGAIN
Murray State is the fourth and final Ohio Valley Conference school the Salukis will face during the 2010-11 season. SIU opened the season with losses to OVC members UT Martin and Tennessee State, before posting its first win of the season over Austin Peay. The Salukis are 117-37 all-time against the current roster of OVC schools.
SALUKIS FALL TO WRIGHT STATE
SIU trailed just five points at halftime, but couldn't stop a second-half surge by Wright State in a 75-53 loss to the Raiders Tuesday at SIU Arena. Southern turned the ball over 20 times and lost the rebounding battle 51-32. Sidney Goins led the Salukis with 16 points while Teri Oliver chipped in 12 and Brooke LeMar added nine points, seven rebounds and six assists.
RECORDS COME IN THREES
The Salukis' 13-for-33 shooting performance from beyond the arc against Wright State set school records for both 3-pointers made and attempted in a game. Southern shot 20 3-pointers in the first half alone to account for two-thirds of the team's shot attempts to that point and finished the game having shot 33 of 56 attempts from down town. SIU's achieved its previous high of 12 made threes several times, most recently last season at Missouri State. The team's previous high of 29 attempts also occurred multiple times, with the last coming at Missouri State in 2007-08.
A STRANGER TO THE STRIPE
SIU's four free throw attempts against Wright State were the least the team has taken in a game since making it to the line just three times against Drake during the 2007-08 season.
DAWG BITES
The Southern Illinois Basketball team is in its 52nd year of existence. Head Coach Missy Tiber is in her second season with the team and holds a 173-101 (.631) career record in her 10th season as a head coach. Last season the Salukis finished with a 5-24 record and were 4-14 in the Missouri Valley Conference. Southern returns five letterwinners and two starters from the 2009-10 squad and welcomes three transfers and eight freshmen.
