CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois' offense could not get over the hump Saturday afternoon, as the Salukis struggled against a solid Drake team, losing in three sets 25-21, 25-19, 25-17.
Drake (15-1, 1-1 MVC) played indicative of its record, dominating SIU (9-3, 0-2 MVC) across the board. For the second straight match, the Salukis were out-hit by their opponent, posting an uncharacteristic .098 hitting percentage to the Bulldogs' .284.
SIU was ahead 12-8 in the first set after a kill from Jennifer Berwanger, but Drake quickly tied the score at 12. Four straight Bulldog kills put DU up 20-16 before three errors allowed the Salukis to close in at 22-21. That was as close as Southern would get, its offense shut down by Drake at the net.
The second and third set saw much of the same, as Drake pounded 47 total kills on the afternoon, led by Angela Bys who posted a match-high 17. Berwanger was the bright spot for the Saluki offense, posting 15 kills and hitting .303.
Bailey Yeager led SIU's defensive effort with 10 digs, while Rachael Brown and Sydney Clark each chipped in five.
Southern Illinois will have a week's rest before heading to Evansville next Saturday, Sept. 25 for a 7 p.m. matchup.
