ROLLA, Mo. - The Southern Illinois men's swimming team lost a dual with Missouri S&T on Friday evening, 121-84, at the S&T pool. The Salukis won both relays but the Miners won seven of the nine individual events to grab the win from SIU. Oleg Rabota (200-yard backstroke) and Till Pallmann (500-yard freestyle) won events for Southern.
The meet started and ended well. Rabota, Calvin Kolar, Matt Frey and Till Pallmann opened the meet with a win in the 400-yard medley relay (3:29.35). The meet ended with the 400-yard freestyle relay. Pallmann, Esteavo Andrade, Eddy Lynk and George Minkel (3:11.88) took 11 points with a first-place finish.
Starting with the second event, however, Missouri S&T--a DII powerhouse that has finished in the top-10 nationally in each of the last 10 years--took command. Miner swimmers won six-straight events, taking each of the top two spots in five of those events. Thomas Defay scored SIU's lone second-place finish in the stretch, finishing second in the 200-yard individual medley (2:00.42).
Rabota (1:56.76) and Pallmann (4:34.73) then won both of their events back-to-back. Olaf Meller (1:49.92) finished third in the 200-yard backstroke, the only individual event in which SIU placed two of the top three finishers.
The next Saluki swim meet is a women's dual with Washington (Mo.) on Jan. 26 in St. Louis, Mo. The men only have one more tune-up before the MAC Championships, a dual meet with Evansville on Feb. 2 at the Dr. Edward J. Shea Natatorium.
