Bubba Schweigert named head coach of North Dakota

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - Saluki Football associate head coach Bubba Schweigert has been named the head football coach of the University of North Dakota, UND announced Tuesday. Schweigert has been the defensive coordinator for all six years of Dale Lennon's tenure as head coach at SIU. The North Dakota native will be formally introduced at a press conference at UND on Friday, Dec. 27.
Schweigert's defense ranked second in the Missouri Valley Football Conference in rush defense and third in the league in tackles for loss per game in 2013.
Schweigert spent 15 years as a member of the North Dakota coaching staff and was Lennon's defensive coordinator there from 1999 until 2003. Schweigert was named the AFCA Division II Assistant Coach of the Year in 2000.
This will be the first Division I head coaching job for Schweigert, who was the head coach of Division II Minnesota Duluth for four seasons before joining the Saluki coaching staff. There he compiled a 22-21 record and was selected the North Central Conference Coach of the Year in 2005. He was also named Northwest Region Coach of the Year by D2football.com and the AFCA Division II Coach of the Year for Region V.
