Jeremy Chinn named MVFC Newcomer of the Week

ST. LOUIS - Southern Illinois freshman safety Jeremy Chinn was named Missouri Valley Football Conference Newcomer of the Week, the league announced Sunday night. Chinn, a true freshman, helped the Salukis beat South Dakota 35-28 on Saturday afternoon at Saluki Stadium.

Chinn stuffed the stat sheet in SIU's 35-28 win over South Dakota on Saturday afternoon at Saluki Stadium. Starting in his fourth game of his true freshman season, Chinn picked off his second pass of the seasons and had seven tackles—six solos—in the win. He also had a tackle for loss and broke up the potential game-winning pass in the end zone with one second left on the clock.

Chinn did not play until the fourth game of the season due to injury, but he has started five-straight MVFC games and is second on the team in tackles per game. His two interceptions are tied for the team lead and rank seventh in the MVFC in conference games.

Southern Illinois plays at Youngstown State on Saturday (11 a.m. CT kickoff) before returning home to face Western Illinois on Nov. 19 for Senior Day.
