Salukis Roll Past Duquesne

INDIANAPOLIS - The Southern Illinois volleyball team swept Duquesne University (25-17, 25-23, 25-20) in the first of its two matches on Saturday at the IUPUI Invitational.
Abby Barrow had 10 kills and hit .333 to lead the Salukis. The Metamora, Ill. native was one of four Salukis to hit at least .200 with double-digit attacks. Alex Rosignol was efficient in the middle, as she had seven kills while hitting .600, and Meg Viggars tallied eight kills while hitting at a .385 clip. Andrea Estrada hit .238 and finished with eight kills. Viggars also added 18 assists, and Mariana Pilon had seven digs.
The Salukis totaled 10 service aces, with Rosignol leading the way with four and Viggars and Kaminsky chipping in three apiece.
Southern bolted to a 9-7 lead in the first set. Duquesne cut it to 10-9 before the Salukis pulled away to an 19-10 lead after a pair of double blocks by Nellie Fredriksson and Rosignol around a Viggars ace. The Dukes had one last gasp on set point, as they scored four-straight points to close the gap to 24-17. However a kill by Estrada ended the rally and gave SIU a 25-17 set win.
After Duquesne took an early 3-2 lead on an ace, Southern rattled off three-straight points, including an ace by Pilon. The Dukes responded with a 3-0 spurt to take back the lead, but the Salukis countered with a 5-0 run to hold a 11-6 advantage. After SIU grew its lead to 14-10 on a kill by Fredriksson, the Dukes scored five straight points to take a lead they carried for most of the second set. After a Saluki error gave Duquesne a 23-21 lead, Southern put it into next gear and won the set with a 4-0 spurt keyed by a solo block by McKenzie Dorris.
The Salukis gained separation from a 15-14 lead in set three with a 6-2 run to go ahead 21-16. Ginger Perinar recorded her first collegiate kill in that run. Southern pulled away down the stretch for a 25-20 margin to finish out the sweep.
The Salukis will look to start 3-0 for the first time since 2009 when they take on the Jaguars in the championship match of the IUPUI Invitational Saturday. First serve is set for 6 p.m. C.T.
