Nicole Martin scored a game-high 16 points to lead the Salukis.
CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Southern Illinois women's basketball team won its second-straight game Thursday, as it led wire-to-wire in a 60-50 win over Martin Methodist in front of a boisterous crowd of 2,222 fans inside the SIU Arena.
The Salukis (5-3) opened the contest with a 13-2 run and the game looked as though it had the makings of a blowout win for Southern. The Redhawks (9-4), however, had other plans. They scrapped and clawed to keep the score close, and while they never led, they also didn't allow SIU to get ahead by more than 11.
"I give credit to Martin Methodist," fifth-year head coach Cindy Stein said. "We learned a lot about ourselves this game. (Martin Methodist) did a fantastic job of making us earn everything."
SIU was led by Nicole Martin, who posted game-highs in points (16) and rebounds (8). It marks the sixth time in eight games this season that the Jefferson City, Mo. native has scored in double figures. Abby Brockmeyer added nine points, seven boards and two blocks, while Kylie Giebelhausen and Makenzie Silvey each chipped in eight points.
Southern shot 43.1% (22-of-51) from the field and held the Redhawks to 27.5% shooting, including just 18.5% (5-of-27) from three-point range. SIU also won the rebounding battle, 41-to-40, and scored 32 of it's 60 points in the paint.
The Salukis exploited their size advantage early and often, as eight of their first 18 points came in the paint. Southern replicated that strategy in the second quarter as 12 of it's 15 points came in the paint to help SIU build a 33-24 lead at the half.
The third quarter saw the Redhawks get to within three, 44-41, on a three-pointer by Brooklyn Blanchard with 2:07 left in the period. Five-straight points by the Salukis pushed their lead back to eight before a three-ball by Blanchard at the buzzer cut Martin Methodist's deficit down to five, 49-44 at the end of three.
The Redhawks got to within one, 51-50 with 4:37 left to play, but the Salukis closed the contest on a 9-0 run to seal the win.
The Salukis return to the SIU Arena on Sunday, Dec. 10 when they host the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers. Tip-off against the reigning Conference USA champions is set for 2 p.m.
