
13 Salukis earn MVC President’s Council Academic Excellence Award

SIU’s 12 recipients of the Valley’s highest academic achievement are its most since at least 2005.
Thirteen Southern Illinois University student-athletes were awarded the Missouri Valley Conference President's Council Academic Excellence Award, the league announced Friday.Â
The award requires a 3.8 cumulative grade point average through the spring semester, participation in a sport at least two years and enough credits to be within 18 hours of graduating. 74 student-athletes earned the league's highest academic achievement, with Southern's 12 recipients second only to Northern Iowa's 13 for most in the Valley. In addition, SIU's 12 honorees were its most since at least 2005.Â
Ryan Sabo, Kim Nebo, Brooke Cusumano, Kristie Yang, Shaye Harre, Merri Anne Patterson, Jessa Thomas, Kiley Handley, Kristina Ksarjian, Lauren Stockton, Polina Dozortseva, Meagan Monaghan and McKenzie Dorris all earned the Valley's highest academic honor.
43 additional Salukis earned the Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award, which requires a 3.5 GPA for the last two semesters and a 3.2 cumulative GPA.
In total, 229 Salukis were honored on the MVC Honor Roll. To qualify for the Valley Honor Roll, a student-athlete must have recorded a minimum 3.2 GPA for a specified term (Fall 2016/Spring 2017), must have been a member of an athletics team, and must have a minimum of 12 hours of enrollment during the fall or spring semesters. More than 1,500 student-athletes from Valley schools earned inclusion on the list.
