Saluki Volleyball falls at Evansville

The Southern Illinois University volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-27, 18-25, 13-25) to the Evansville Purple Aces in Missouri Valley Conference play Friday night. Maggie Nedoma finished with a team-best 10 kills and eight digs to lead the Salukis. Southern also finished with eight blocks, including four from Patience Brown.
The Purple Aces improve to 7-12 overall and 1-5 in conference play, while the Salukis drop to 4-14 and 0-5 in the Valley.
KEY MOMENTS
- Neither side led by more than two for much of first half of the opening set and Southern trailed by just one at the media timeout (15-14). The Purple Aces built a three-point cushion behind Rachel Tam, who finished with 10 kills in the frame.
- SIU battled back with four-straight points on Evansville's set point to take its first lead of the set, 25-24. The Purple Aces used their final timeout and countered with back-to-back kills by Mildrelis Rodriquez. Both teams hit at a .216 clip in the opening set.
- The two teams engaged in a sideout battle early in set two, as neither team led by more then one until a 4-0 Evansville run broke a 9-all tie. SIU got to within two, 14-12 on a kill by Nedoma but Evansville countered with another 4-0 spurt and never trailed by less then six to take a 2-0 lead.Â
- The Purple Aces hit .231 and held the Salukis to a .000 clip in the third set. Evansville led by nine at the midway point, 15-6 and built a double-digit lead to seal the win.
KEY STATS
- Maggie Nedoma put down 10 kills against two errors for a .296 hitting percentage. She added eight digs and it marked the 13th time this season that sophomore hitter has tallied 10-plius kills.
- Kat Wagner chipped in four kills to go along with 10 digs. Wagner was one of SIU's most reliable back row passers all night, including aÂ
- Alayna Martin dished out 20 assists and added six digs while Marissa Rossi chipped in four assists, an ace and a dig.

The Salukis close out their four-match road swing at Indiana State Saturday night. First serve versus the Sycamores is set for 7 p.m.
