Volleyball drops three-set decision to Loyola

The Southern Illinois University volleyball team dropped a three-set decision to the Loyola Ramblers Friday night inside Davies Gym. The Ramblers won by the set scores of 25-18, 25-20, 25-19.
Inside the match
• The Ramblers took the first two-point lead of the opening frame, 8-6. Loyola added to its lead by scoring five of the next six points to open up a 13-8 advantage. Southern got to within one with Laura Rojas at the service line, as back-to-back Loyola errors cut SIU's deficit to one, 15-14.
• That was as close as the Salukis could get in the opening frame though, as the Ramblers snuffed out Southern's comeback attempt with five-straight points to build a five-point lead, 20-15 and cruise to the set one win.
• The second set featured 10 ties and three lead changes.
• The Salukis took their first lead of the match in the second set with Rachel Maguire serving. Maguire served an ace and Lindsey Paulsen added a solo block to give SIU a 6-4 advantage. An ace by Keera Clarke grew Southern's lead to three, 8-5 but the Ramblers answered with four of the next five points to tie the frame, 9-all.Â
• The Salukis tied the set 16-all on back-to-back kills by Malvis Ortiz and tied the set for the final time, 18-all with a kill by Patience Brown. The Ramblers scored seven of the next nine points to finish off the set and take a 2-0 set score lead. The Ramblers were aided by a .447 hitting percentage in the second frame.
• The Salukis used a 7-0 run with Patience Brown serving to turn a three-point deficit (10-7) into a four-point lead (14-10) in the third set. The Ramblers countered with a 5-1 run to tie the set, 15-all. Southern again knotted the set at 16-all but three-straight points by Loyola gave the visitors a lead it never surrendered.
Inside the Numbers
• Lindsey Paulsen led the Salukis with nine kills and six blocks which marks the third time in her last five matches that the Frankfort, Ill. native has led the team in kills.Â
• Rachel Maguire added seven kills, three digs and an ace. Maguire put down five of her seven kills in the third frame.
• Alison Thomas got the start in the back row and finished with two aces and five digs. It marked the sixth time this year that the Haymarket, Va. native has tallied multiple aces in a match and she now leads the team with 19 aces on the season.
• Alayna Martin tallied 24 assists, six digs and two kills while Laura Rojas and Keera Clarke finished with 12 and 11 digs, respectively.

The Salukis close out the 2018 season against the Valparaiso Crusaders. The match begins at 7 p.m. and will be SIU's senior night, as Southern will honor its two seniors, Malvis Ortiz and Patience Brown, prior to tomorrow's match.
