
Saluki swimming and diving holds in second at MVC Championships

With one day left to go at the Missouri Valley Conference Swimming and Diving Championships, Southern Illinois remains in second.

The Salukis grew their lead over third-place Northern Iowa to 100 points, but lost ground on Missouri State who leads the meet. The Salukis have 433.5 points, the Bears are out front with a team score of 522.5. Senior Bryn Handley earned All-Conference honors with her second second place finish of the meet.

In the 200-yard freestyle, Handley was second with a time of 1:49.24 for her second All-Conference honor of the week. Senior Kelsie Walker was ninth, junior Jordan Ries was 10th and senior Chandler Ott was 16th.

In the 400-yard IM, the Salukis placed three swimmers into the championship finals. Sophomore Peyton Parman led the way in the event with a time of 4:26.01. Sophomore Sam Parsons was sixth and sophomore Laura Carver was seventh. Junior Abby Kresal was fourth in the consolation final and 12th overall.

In the 100-yard butterfly, freshman Abbie Young was eighth overall with a time of 56.48 in the finals. Sophomore Rita Naude won the consolation final and was ninth overall.

In the 100-yard breaststroke, Parsons led the way with a time of 1:04.13 and a fifth place finish. Junior Jess Peck was eighth with a time of 1:04.52. Senior Liane Tatigian won the consolation final with a time of 1:04.47 and was ninth overall. Kresal was 11th with a time of 1:05.03.

In the 100-yard backstroke, Rita Naude was 11th with a time of 57.08, the fifth-fastest time in program history. Senior McKenna Avery was 13th and sophomore Juliana Carvalho was 16th.

In the final event of the evening, the 400-yard medley relay, the Saluki team of Avery, Parsons, Brazeau and Handley finished fifth with a time of 3:48.12.
