Saluki volleyball drops three-set decision to SEMO

The Southern Illinois University volleyball team dropped a three-set decision to the SEMO Redhawks(13-25, 19-25, 19-25) in mid-week non-conference action Tuesday night. The Redhawks, playing in front of a raucous 705 fans, led from start to finish in the win. Maggie Nedoma paced the Salukis with 10 kills while Kat Wagner led Southern's defensive efforts with 13 digs.
Inside the match
• The Redhawks scored ten of the first 11 points in the first set. SEMO's defense limited Southern to eight kills and a negative hitting percentage to take the frame.
• The Salukis bounced back in the second set with its best single-set hitting percentage of the night, swinging at a .214 clip, and held the Redhawks to a .125 hitting percentage. SEMO led early, but SIU got to within two on several occasions, including 15-13 on back-to-back kills by Alysa Sutton and Patience Brown. After Maggie Nedoma's fifth kill of the match cut SIU's deficit to three, 18-15, the Redhawks scored seven of the last 11 points to take the frame.

The Brook Park, Ohio native is the first Saluki since Jessica Whitehead in 2011 to open a season with 10-plus kills in seven-straight matches.
• Kat Wagner led the Saluki defense with a career-high 13 digs and added two assists. It is the fourth time this season that Wagner has notched at least 10 digs in a match.
• Jill Kavalauskas made her Saluki debut a memorable one Tuesday night, as the freshman outside hitter hit 1.000 and put down three kills on three swings.
• Emma Baalman made the most of her opportunities, as she hit at a .667 clip with four kills on six swings.
• Alayna Martin piloted the offense with 23 assists and five digs.
