
Salukis win big on Day Two of SIU Invitational

CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Southern Illinois swimming and diving program won 13 of 14 finals events to maintain leads atop of the team standings on Day Two at the SIU Invitational. The women's team (778) leads second-place Evansville (633) by 145 points, while the men's team (679) is ahead of the Aces (596) by an 83-point margin. Wisconsin-Whitewater remains in third place on both sides.

MEET HIGHLIGHTS

The Saluki women swept finals events on Day Two of the SIU Invite. Five different Salukis tabbed first-place finishes in individual competition.
Rita Naude started things off with a victory in the 100-yard butterfly. She had a season-best time of 56.68 in the event, which was her first win of the invite.
Sarah Vogt earned her first win as a Saluki in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.72). The freshman held off Samantha Parsons, who finished runner-up with a mark of 1:05.33.
Laura Carver came close to breaking a school record for the second-straight day, as she raced to a winning time of 4:20.74 in the 400-yard individual medley. Her mark was .90 seconds shy of former Saluki Kirsten Groome's time of 4:19.84 set during the 2009-10 season. Payton Parman finished second in the event at 4:30.27.
In the 100-yard backstroke, Deven Speed and Juliana Carvalho went one-two in the standings with times of 57.09 and 57.76. Both Salukis have tallied first-place and runner-up finishes through two days at the invite.
Sierra Forbord (1:51.03) outlasted Evansville swimmer Sonsoles Aguayo (1:51.20) by .17 seconds to take first in the 200-yard freestyle. She won the 50-yard freestyle on Day One and will go for the winning trifecta in freestyle events tomorrow in the 100-yard freestyle.
SIU opened and closed the evening session with first-place marks in relay action. The quartet of Speed, Vogt, Naude and Forbord won the 200-yard medley relay (1:43.08), while Carver, Eden Girloanta, Carvalho and Forbord took the top spot in the 800-yard freestyle relay (7:38.55).
*Men's team
Freshman Adam Cernek inched closer to the 100-back school record of 47.79, as he raced to a winning mark of 48.81. Another freshman, Ian Marshall, won the 400-IM with a sub-four mark of 3:59.12. Drake Manuello finished close behind in third place (4:05.15).
The Salukis took the top three spots in the 100-breast. Chris Phillips led the charge with a winning time of 57.17, while Jimmy Dooley was second (57.29) and Kyle Berquist was third (57.94).
Zheng Yang Yeap came away with a freestyle victory for the second-straight day, as he managed to win the 200-free with a time of 1:39.43. Kevin Kluge was runner-up at 1:40.22.
Southern captured first-place finishes in both relay events as well. Cernek, Dooley, Tamas Hajtman and Yeap took first in the 200-medley relay with a time of 1:30.94. The winning team of Kluge, Max Ransom, Cernek and Yeap swam 6:44.11 in the 400-medley relay.
