The Southern Illinois University volleyball team fell in four sets at Indiana State (25-21, 20-25, 22-25, 18-25) Friday night inside ISU Arena.
The Salukis (13-16, 5-10 MVC), who are ravaged by injuries, took the opening set from the Sycamores but were undone by their miscues. Nearly half of Indiana State's points (46-of-96) came off of Southern's errors.Â
SIU took the opening set after it broke a 10-all tie with a 5-0 run with Emma Baalman at the service line. Indiana State cut the lead down to three, 24-21, but Savannah Sheridan's sixth kill of the first set gave Southern a 25-21 win.
The Salukis fell behind by four (12-8) early in the second set, but battled back to tie the frame at 18-all. From that point, it was the Sycamores who used a 5-0 run to take a lead it never surrendered. In the third set, Southern again rallied to tie the frame at 17-all, and scored four of the next five points to build a 21-18 advantage. Indiana State, however, turned the tables and scored seven of the final eight points to take a 2-1 set score lead. With momentum on their side, the Sycamores broke a 7-all tie and never trailed from that point forward to seal the 3-1 win.
The Salukis were led offensively by Savannah Sheridan and Rachel Maguire. Sheridan put down a career-high 19 kills and added three digs. Maguire, meanwhile, notched her NCAA-leading 12th triple-double, as she tallied 11 kills, 18 assists and 12 digs. Kat Wagner added six kills and 10 digs, Alayna Martin chipped in six kills, 22 assists and 12 digs while Lindsey Paulsen put down six kills and a block.
Laura Rojas was one of five Salukis to notch double-digit digs Friday night. Rojas dug out a team-best 18 balls, while Abi Fitzpatrick totaled 11 digs. Maguire (12), Wagner (10) and Martin (12) joined Rojas and Fitzpatrick in double figures. As a team, SIU finished with 77 digs and is now 52 digs shy of breaking a 34-year old school record for total digs in a season.
The Salukis are back in action tomorrow when they travel to Evansville, Ind. to take on the Evansville Purple Aces. First serve is set for 5 p.m.
