Dawgs battle but fall to Indiana State in Season Finale

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois (0-15-1) dominated the first half of the match up with the Sycamores of Indiana State (6-7-3), scoring the lone goal of the first 45 minutes in the Salukis' 1-3 loss in their final game of the season.
Sophomore forward Sam Dodd notched two more points under her belt with a shot down the straightaway in the top left of the box, off the bounce from sophomore forward McKensey Bunch, bringing a Saluki lead 1-0 in the 31st minute.
Leading at halftime, SIU racked in five shots and five saves to the Trees, before defender Chloee Kooker tied up the match on a penalty kick in the 55th minute, drawn by a foul in the box on the Sycamores' corner.
Indiana State continued their rally with finding the back of the Saluki net off a corner kick, led in off the head of midfielder Alise Emser, knocked with the assist by forward Audrey Stephens with 59:55 on the clock. ISU finalized the match with an upright tip to the top of the net, while SIU freshman keeper Ary Lougher was down, off the foot of midfielder Chloe Tesny, bringing the score 3-1.
The freshman from New York, Lougher, got her third start of her career in the Saluki box and accumulated seven saves. Along with Dodd's 31st minute goal, junior forward Liz Brechtel played the sidelines, recording a season-high three shots with two on-goal in 69 minutes, followed by junior midfielder Christy Murauskis who notched two shots and two on-goal for the Maroon and White. Playing in their last colligate match, seniors Kailyn Stone and Ellie Lewis gained some time on the field as the clock was winding down, with Lewis' marking a shot and finalizing their time as Salukis.
Closing out the program's third season, the Salukis showcased growth and ended 2021 with six goals, 9.2 shots per game, 85 saves, and a .435 shots-on-goal percentage.
