CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Southern Illinois University volleyball team dropped a four-set match to Indiana State (26-28, 20-25, 25-23, 17-25) in the season finale at Davies Gym on Saturday night.
Before the match, the Salukis (5-26, 0-18 MVC) recognized seniors Katy Kluge and Bryleigh Buchanan for their work and dedication to the program.
On the attack, SIU had three players post double-digit kills — Nataly Garcia hit 12 and marked her 19th double-digit match in kills, Tatum Tornatta added 11, while junior Alex Washington marked 10 kills in four sets for the Salukis. Margherita Giani hit .364 with six kills and two digs on the defensive side.
Libero Katy Kluge notched 24 digs on the Saluki side of the net, while also recording two service aces against the Sycamores (17-11, 9-9 MVC). Joining the 1,000 assists club earlier this season, freshman Anna Jaworski dished out 24 assists, followed by Peyton Plant recording eight assists.
The Salukis nearly pulled out the first set, with back and forth rallies ending with a Nataly Garcia kill, that ultimately landed in the Sycamores' favor.
The bounce-back in the third set hung in the balance with both teams landing four-straight points each to start the match. The Salukis took the next eight of 10 points, with a stump block by Averi Vanderzille and Nataly Garcia giving Southern the 25th point and a win in set three.
Only the top six teams in the conference standings advance to the MVC Volleyball Championships starting November 25 in Normal, Ill., thereby ending SIU's season.
