Zaborska Shines on Day One of MVC Championships

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Freshman standout Mima Zaborska takes the Salukis first individual first place title on day one of the 2021 MVC Swimming and Diving Championships, hosted at home inside Shea Natatorium. The Salukis are currently in second-place with 177 points, only below to rival Missouri State on the opening day.
The women's 200-freestyle relay squad of Imogen Watson, Gaby Jenkins. Lucia Romero, and Sierra Forbord clocked in at a season-best, 1:33.33, shaving off .51 seconds for a second place finish to start off the finals portion of the meet.
After breaking past five-minutes for the first time all season in the preliminaries, junior Eden Girloanta swam a near personal best with a time of 4:58.06 in the 500-freestyle event and put SIU on the board in individual points with a fifth-place finish as the lone Saluki in the final.
Zaborska got the environment moving with her tight first-place finale in the 200-individual medley. After starting off the the backstroke and butterfly legs in third place, she caught up to pace in the lead in her best event, breaststroke. With a near-photo finish, the Slovakia native out performed Missouri State's Sami Roemer by .07 seconds and created her new personal best at 2:02.36.
Freshman diver Ally Brown out performed on the one-meter in the afternoon, making the "A" final and placing fourth with a 231.15, her second-best of the season.
Senior Sierra Forbord kept Southern on the podium, swimming her newfound personal best in a tight race of the 50-freestyle sprint, earning second-place at 23.03.
SIU finished second with another tough battle in the 400-medley relay. Romero led off in the backstroke, followed by Zaborska's staple event of breaststroke, Abigail Young in butterfly, and Forbord finishing the relay on freestyle. The Salukis notched a time of 3:43.45, shaving their seed time of 3:44.26.
