OXFORD, Ohio — The Southern Illinois men's swimming and diving team broke two school records on day two at the Missouri Valley Conference Championships. The Salukis remain in third place with 384.5 points. Miami of Ohio outshines defending champion Missouri State, as SIU was narrowly behind at the start of the finals session.
Southern's 200-medley relay squad of Adam Cernek, Kyle Berquist, Zander Minano, and Donat Csuvarszki raced home with silver, slimming down on their previous seed time by 1.47 seconds and clocking in at 1:28.56.
Junior Kyle Campbell took the top rank in Friday morning's preliminary on the three-meter board, setting the bar at a 302.25 performance as the three-meter finals will take place tomorrow night.
Sophomore Sam Flessner and freshman Will Chavez recorded new personal bests in the water tonight, while taking home seventh and fifth place final finishes. Flessner raced a 4:00.28 in the 400-yard individual medley, while Chavez hit the wall at 1:38.45 -- dropping his previous preliminaries time by .39 seconds.
Reigning MAC 100-backstroke champion, Adam Cernek, fought a battle for the Salukis in the water and took the only individual top-three placement of the evening. The sophomore clocked in at 47.79 for a second place finish, racing his best of the season and only .15 away from his previously set school and MAC Championship record.
The Salukis swept the 100-butterfly "B" final: junior Zander Minano took home first (48.92), followed by freshman Marc Avery (49.20), and sophomore Max Ransom (49.29). All three swam career-bests in the event.
The Salukis finished the evening with a third place finish in the 800-freestyle relay, with Will Chavez, Zheng Yang Yeap, Terry Yang, and Cernek swimming in the Maroon.
SIU will be back in action tomorrow for day three at the MAC Championships, which will feature six finals events. Preliminary events will begin at 9:30 a.m, followed by finals events at 5:30 p.m.
