
Salukis drop three-set decision to UNI

CARBONDALE, Ill. -Â The Southern Illinois volleyball fell to the University of Northern Iowa in a three-set match (6-25, 20-25, 20-25) Saturday night at Davies Gym. The Salukis move to 9-7 (2-2 MVC) on the season.
The Salukis struggled with the Panthers defense at the net, as UNI tallied 9 total blocks and held Southern to hitting .085 hitting percentage on the night. The Panthers on the other hand finished with a .372 hitting percentage, marking a season-high for the Panthers.
UNI jumped out to a quick start, scoring the first four points of the first set before a kill from Ceci Bulmahn ended the run Panthers' run. Everything continued to go UNI's way from there however as it would go on to finish the first set with a .522 hitting percentage, four blocks, and three aces.
Both teams traded points for much of the second set before the Panthers went on a six to one run and got out in front 20-14 and held the lead from there. The Salukis fought their way back and brought themselves within four at 18-22 thanks to a pair of kills from Tatum Tornatta and Imani Hartfield but the Panthers offensive efficiency proved to be too much down the stretch.Â
Anna Jaworski started the third set with an ace and the gave the Salukis a brief lead before a six-point run from the Panthers put UNI out in front. SIU put together a run of its own and nearly evened the frame at 8-9 but another run from the Panthers cushioned their lead as they ran away with the match.Â
Tatum Tornatta led the Salukis with nine kills and a .333 hitting percentage. She currently leads SIU with 189 kills on the year.
Southern Illinois returns to action next Friday, Oct. 8 at Evansville with a matchup against the Purple Aces beginning at 5 p.m.
