CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University (8-3-4) earned a 1-1 draw on Thursday night at Valparaiso in its second-to-last match of the regular season.
In a battle between the second and third place teams in the conference, it was the two defenses that got off to a strong start. Neither team was able to put a dent in the scoreboard after the opening 45 minutes of play, leading to a 0-0 score at the halftime break.
Southern Illinois' best chance of the first half came in the eighth minute. Paris Walsh had a free-kick from 40 yards out hit the crossbar to keep the score level at 0-0.
In the 62nd minute, Lara Barbieri played the ball out to Liz Brechtel, who's first-time finish went just under the crossbar to give the Salukis a 1-0 lead. Brechtel now has a team-high four goals on the season, while Barbieri's assist was the first of her Saluki career.Â
The Beacons answered quickly, however, tying the match in the 67th minute through Lindsey Dusatko. This was the last goal of the contest, with the final score being 1-1.
The draw keeps Valparaiso in second place in the Valley, and Southern Illinois in third with an overall record of 8-3-4 and a conference record of 5-1-3. The Salukis will travel to UIC on Sunday to face the Flames at 12 p.m. in their final game of the regular season.
