
Salukis fall to Murray State in MVC Quarterfinals

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University (8-5-4) saw its season come to an end on Sunday in a 2-1, double overtime loss to Murray State in the Missouri Valley Conference quarterfinals.Â
The Salukis struck first in the opening half through Kaitlin DuCharme. In the 32nd minute, Lara Barbieri Da Silva found DuCharme off of a corner, and the senior found the back-of-the-net to give Southern Illinois a 1-0 lead. The goal was DuCharme's third of the season, and the program's first in its history.
Southern Illinois carried the lead into the second half, and held on to the advantage up until the 80th minute. With 10 minutes remaining, Murray State's Mary Hardy scored the game-tying goal to make it 1-1.Â
The match went to overtime, where two 10-minute halves were played. Neither team scored in the opening 10 minutes, but the Racers scored the decisive goal in the 110th minute through Saraya Young.Â
With the win, Murray State advances to the semifinals to take on Valparaiso on Thursday, Nov. 3.Â
Southern Illinois ends the year with an 8-5-4 overall record, and a 5-2-3 conference record. Both are bests in program history, and helped the team secure its first-ever playoff berth.Â
