Salukis fall to UNI in five-set thriller

The Southern Illinois volleyball team fell just short to Northern Iowa in five-sets (25-22, 18-25, 29-27, 21-25, 15-17) on Friday night. With just two matches left in the regular season, SIU sits at 17-11 (10-6 MVC).Â
The Salukis totaled a season-high 15 aces led by Bailey Neuberger with six. Neuberger now has 29 aces on the season, which is the third most on the team and 14th most in the Valley. Anna Jaworski (3), Nataly Garcia (2), Brinely Burdette (2), Annabelle Sulish (1), and Claudia Bobb (1) all contributed to the Salukis' successful night at the service line as well.Â
Both Southern Illinois and UNI had 66 kills on the night, however the Panthers hit .262 compared to SIU's .136 hitting percentage. The Salukis struggled with Northern Iowa's stingy defense at the net as the Panthers also recorded 17 total blocks on the night, the most from any SIU opponent on the season.Â
Outside hitter Imani Hartfield had a season-high 17 kills on just 29 attacks while hitting .552. Hartfield continues to lead the Valley with a .390 hitting percentage with 264 total kills (16th in the MVC). She also added three total blocks to her statline against the Panthers.Â
Nataly Garcia got her eighth double-double of the year as she led the Salukis with 18 kills as well as tallying 11 digs. Tatum Tornatta (15) and Annabelle Sulish (12) rounded out the Salukis' evenly distributed offensive attack as they've now had two consecutive matches with four players with 10 or more kills. Setter Anna Jaworski added to her Valley-leading assist total with 55. Claudia Bobb led the Salukis defense with 24 digs with no errors.Â
Southern Illinois returns to action Saturday, Nov. 12 as the Salukis head to Drake to take on the Bulldogs. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
