SIU hit four home runs in Tuesday's game. 1B JT Weber hit two of them, giving him a team-high 4 home runs this season and giving him 21 for his career. He is three home runs shy of cracking SIU's Top Ten in career home runs. SS Kaeber Rog hit his first HR of the season. 3B Ryan Rodriguez came off the bench in the second inning and hit the first home run of his Saluki career.
The Salukis secured their 23rd consecutive win over SIU when they scored six runs in the first inning. SIU sent 10 men to the plate in that inning. Weber, who had three RBI in the game, drove in the first run of the inning with a single. Two hitters later C Zack Jensen delivered a two-run single. Back-to-back doubles by RF Nathan Bandy and CF Jack Rigoni produced the final three runs of the inning.
Weber's homer in the second inning made it 7-0 SIU. His solo shot down the left field in the 7th inning accounted for SIU's final run.
Rodriguez and Rog homered back-to-back in the 5th inning raising SIU's lead to 11-2. Rodriguez' was a two-run homer.
Bandy and Rigoni each drove in their second runs of the day in the sixth inning when Bandy hit a sacrifice fly and Rigoni hit his second double of the game.
2B Grey Epps also drove in a run with an infield single in the fifth inning.
Pitching for the first time since he pitched the first six innings of SIU's combined no-hitter vs. Austin Peay, starter Ben Riffe could not get past the fourth inning. He allowed two runs on five hits and walked four.
Jordan Gould (1-0) relieved Gould in the fourth and pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief to score his first Saluki victory.
1B/DH Jeremy Schork came off the SIU bench to pitch a scoreless ninth inning allowing one hit and striking out two.
Starting pitcher Johnny Beck (0-1) suffered the loss for Western Illinois.
SIU's won seven games in a row since its Opening Day 1-0 loss at Louisiana Monroe. The Salukis open a three-game series at Little Rock Friday.Â
