MARTIN, Tenn. --Â A hefty fourth inning set the game for the Skyhawks as Southern Illinois tried to bounce back in the Salukis' 5-2 loss to UT-Martin Tuesday evening.
After two scoreless innings with a single down the left side for junior Pier-Olivier Boucher in the second, UT Martin (6-9) struck home plate first with an RBI double down the third base line by Casey Hartford in the bottom of the third. The Salukis (12-4) hung onto their bullpen and junior Ben Riffe to showcase the Saluki defense to no avail. UT Martin set out with a three-run fourth inning with RBI singles to the outfield gaps to bring the score 4-0.
Starter Ben Riffe went for his second career start in front of 203 at Skyhawk Field. Riffe had a rocky evening on the mound, throwing three innings, giving up four runs with three strikeouts before Matthew Steidl came on the bump to relieve in the fourth. The junior from Gallatin, Tennessee went on for three hits and a strikeout in the next inning.
With the Skyhawks third man on the mound, Baylor Jones, the Salukis overcame a rough seven innings at the plate. Senior first-baseman J.T. Weber came out as first batter of the top of seven, swinging hard down the middle at the first pitch to see the ball gone over the fence for his eighth home run on the season and bring the Salukis on the board.
The home team ended their scoring run with an RBI single to left field by the Skyhawks'Â first-baseman Ethan Whitley.
SIU garnered another run in the eighth: after Nick Hagedorn was walked and advanced to second base by a wild pitch, a fielding error on the left side led for Cody Cleveland to head to first, while Hagedorn scored going home, unearned.
Southern Illinois is back on the home mound this weekend when the Salukis' host the Illinois Fighting Illini in a three-game series with first pitch going at 6pm Friday at Itchy Jones Stadium.
