WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Three Salukis scored in double figures, but the Southern Illinois University women's basketball team fell to the Purdue Boilermakers 82-60 inside Mackey Arena on Wednesday night. The Salukis' (21-10) remarkable season comes to a close with the loss; Southern finished the season undefeated at home and earned a Missouri Valley Conference regular season title and a WNIT bid; the latter two had not occurred since the 2006-07 season.
"This group probably worked harder than any group I've ever had," said head coach Cindy Stein. "One through fourteen worked extremely hard. This is a very special group."
Makenzie Silvey's 10 point performance saw her eclipse the 2,000 career point mark; Silvey joins Charlie Vaughn and Kent Williams as the only Saluki basketball players, men's or women's, to ever reach that mark.
Southern was led offensively by Gabby Walker with 19 points and nine rebounds, while Abby Brockmeyer added 17 points and grabbed nine boards of her own.
"This senior class will go down in the history books as one of the best ever," said Stein.
The trio of Silvey, Brockmeyer and Walker accounted for all of Southern's nine steals in the ballgame, helping to force the Boilermakers into sixteen turnovers.
"Our kids played really, really hard. This group doesn't ever give up" said Stein. "That's what I appreciate about them so much."
