Carbondale, Il. – Northwestern scored 13 runs in the final three innings Sunday at Carbondale and overwhelmed the Salukis, 15-6. The win was NU's (9-10) second in three days over the Salukis and its seventh in a row overall. SIU (17-7) completed a 2-2 week.
SIU led 4-2 with two outs in the top of the 7th inning. With runners on first and second Wildcat catcher JC Santini sent a slowly hit ground ball between SIU 3B Cody Cleveland and SS Kaeber Rog. The two collided, Cleveland was charged with an error, and Santini was safe at first loading the bases. Northwestern CF Evan O'Donnell followed with a grand slam home run-his third HR in two games vs. SIU-to give NU a 6-4 lead.
With none out in the bottom of the seventh, Rog made it 6-5 NU when he drove in J.T. Weber with a double off reliever David Utagawa. Coby Moe (1-1) replaced Utagawa and retired the Salukis in order stranding Rog at second base. NU LF Luke Tanner aided Moe's cause with a diving catch of C Nick Hagedorn's line drive to end the inning.
Northwestern put the game out of reach in the top of the eighth inning when it scored eight runs on eight hits off Saluki relievers Matthew Steidl (0-2) and Trey McDaniel. Â 2B Jay Beshears began the inning by homering off of Steidl. It was Beshears' third home run in two games vs. SIU. 1B Anthony Calarco struck the biggest blow later in the inning with a grand slam home run off of McDaniel.
SIU 1B Ryan Rodriguez singled in RF Evan Martin in the bottom of the 8th inning to make it 14-6 NU.
The Wildcats added a 15th run in the 9th inning off Saluki reliever Jeremy Schork.
Northwestern grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second inning against Saluki starter Ben Chapman on O'Donnell's two run double.
SIU tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third inning when Cleveland and CF J.T. Weber hit back-to-back home runs to open the inning. It was Weber's 11th HR of the season and his third in two games. Southern added two more runs and grabbed a 4-2 lead on C Nick Hagedorn's two-run home run.
Reliever Tanner Lewis and Steidl made that lead stand up until the decisive 7th and 8th innings.
SIU continues its 11-game home stand with a Tuesday 6pm. game vs. UT Martin.
NOTES:
Weber's HR was the 28th of his career tying him with Matt Dettman (1997-98) and Sal Frisella (2000-03) for fifth place on SIU's career home runs list … Weber had two hits in the game and raised his batting average to .430 … Five Saluki pitchers combined to strike out 10, but walked eight … SIU stranded 10 base runners and Northwestern stranded eight … SIU has 40 home runs in 24 games this season and is on pace to break the school's single season team home run record of 84 set last season … Northwestern outscored SIU 25-10 in the first two games ever between the two Illinois-based schools … The Wildcats had 31 hits and hit eight home runs in the 2 games vs. SIU.
