SIU (11-2) won its fourth game in a row overall and its third in a row over ASU. ASU (4-7) dropped its third game in a row, all at home.
Trailing 1-0 in the third inning, SIU batted around scoring five runs on four hits. All five of the runs were unearned. ASU first baseman Jared Toler's error on Kaeber Rog's ground ball started the inning. A single and three hitters later Zack Jensen plated Rog with a single. Nathan Bandy followed with a double scoring Jensen to put SIU up 2-1. ASU LF Jaylon Deshazier dropped Nick Hagedorn's fly ball scoring Bandy. After Evan Martin walked, Grey Epps delivered SIU's first triple of the season scoring Hagedorn and Martin to give the Salukis a 5-1 lead.
The Salukis made it 6-1 in the fifth inning on Hagedorn's SF fly scoring Jensen.
Southern sent eight men to the plate in the sixth inning and scored three runs to give it a 9-1 lead. JT Weber drove in his team-leading 14th run with a double. Three hitters later Bandy drove in both Weber and Cody Cleveland, who had singled, with the final two runs of the inning.
SIU scored three more runs in the seventh inning on RBI singles by Cleveland and Weber. Jensen drove in the third run of the inning when he received a bases loaded walk. Two of those runs were unearned as ASU committed its third error of the game.
Down 12-1, the Red Wolves scored four runs in the final three innings against Saluki relievers Jordan Gould and Payton Tinkler. ASU's seventh inning run was the only run Gould allowed in three innings of relief.
The first of three Saluki relievers, newcomer Jake Kuntzendorf (1-0), earned his first Division One win with three innings of two hit, one run work. Noah Farmer was SIU's "opener" Wednesday pitching a scoreless first inning.
Weber led SIU with four hits in five at bats. CF Bandy drove in three runs with two hits. No other Saluki had two or more hits and SIU did not homer enroute to its seventh double figure scoring outburst in 13 games this season. The Salukis are averaging 8.4 runs per game.
SIU totaled 12 runs on 12 hits off nine Arkansas State pitchers. The Salukis received 8 walks. SIU, which beat SIUE 18-13 Tuesday, has scored 30 runs on 26 hits and received 18 walks in two games this week.
The week continues Thursday at Itchy Jones Stadium when SIU hosts Western Michigan (1-9) in a 3 pm. three-game series opener. The series has been pushed up one day due to the weekend's weather forecast. Weather-permitting, the final two games of the series will be played at times to be determined between Friday and Sunday.Â
