Carbondale, Il. … Saluki Baseball scored two runs on a passed ball and on a double play in the seventh inning Friday versus Indiana St. and beat the Sycamores 5-3 for SIU's fifth consecutive win and its fourth in a row in the MVC. The two runs broke a 3-3 tie and upped SIU's record to 36-13, 12-4. Fourth place Indiana St. fell to 23-18, 8-8.
Saluki catcher Nick Hagedorn, who opened the decisive 7th inning with a single off Indiana St. starter Matt Jachec (7-2, 2-1), scored on a passed ball by ISU catcher Grant Magill to break the 3-3 tie. Two hitters after Jack Rigoni singled Hagedorn to third on a hit and run play, reliever Jack Parisi induced Saluki star J.T. Weber to hit into a double play scoring Rigoni.
Reliever and winning pitcher Matthew Steidl made the lead stand up when he retired the Sycamores in order in the eighth inning and when he escaped a two-out, two on threat in the ninth. In all, Steidl (5-2, 3-0) pitched 5.2 innings of four hit, no run relief.
Pier-Olivier Boucher doubled in Weber with the game's first run in the first inning.
Cody Cleveland doubled in Evan Martin to make it 2-1 SIU in the second inning. Two hitters later Rog singled in Cleveland to make it 3-1 SIU.
The Sycamores tied the game in the fourth inning at three apiece. A bases loaded walk by Steidl to ISU SS Josue Uredaneta made it 3-2 SIU. Randall Diaz followed with a sacrifice fly tying the game at three. It remained 3-3 until the seventh inning when the Salukis scored the two decisive runs.
Indiana St.'s first run scored in the second inning on Seth Gergely's single and it tied the game at one apiece.
The same two teams play game two of their three game series at 2pm. Saturday at Itchy Jones Stadium. SIU's scheduled starter is Noah Farmer (5-1, 2-1). Indiana St. is scheduled to counter with Connor Fenlong (0-1, 0-0).
