Murray St. scores 3 in the 12th to win at SIU 5-2

Carbondale, Ill. … The third straight extra inning baseball game between SIU and Murray St. went to the Racers Tuesday in Carbondale 5-2 in 12 innings. Murray St. beat SIU reliever Trey McDaniel (6-1) for the first time in four career decisions when it scored three runs on 2 hits, two walks and one hit batsman in the 12th inning. Murray St. reliever Alec Whaley (4-2) earned his first ever win versus SIU.
Murray St. is 25-19. SIU is 31-13 and has its second losing streak of the season, two games.
The game marked the first time this season SIU lost when it scored the first run in a game. Grey Epps slugged his 8th home run of the game with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning giving SIU a 1-0 lead.
But the Racers' Carson Garner hit his fourth home run of the season on Saluki reliever Jake Kutzendorf's first pitch of the top of the sixth inning tying the game at one. Three hitters later the Racers grabbed a 2-1 lead when Bryson Bloomer drove in Jake Slunder with a sacrifice fly.
SIU SS Kaeber Rog's mammoth home run to right field off Racer reliever Matt Boynton tied the game at 2-2 in the eighth inning. It was Rog's 11th home run of his first SIU season and his team-leading 44th RBI.
SIU, however, managed just two base runners after that off versus Boynton, Allen Roulette and Whaley.
In the meantime, SIU relievers Jordan Gould, Tanner Lewis and McDaniel kept Murray St. at bay after it took the 2-1 sixth inning lead.
That is, until the decisive 12th inning. That's when McDaniel walked Brennan McCullough and gave up a single to Dustin Mercer to start the inning. McDaniel then hit Alex Crump with a pitch as Crump was attempting to bunt loading the bases. McDaniel struck out the next two hitters, but then walked MSU's Jake Slunder to force in what turned out to be the game winning run. DH Jacob Pennington followed with a two-run single to make it 5-2.
Southern managed just a two out walk in the bottom of the 12th and fell to 3-2 in extra-inning games this season.
The Salukis return to action Friday in Springfield, Mo. for an 11am. three game series opener versus Missouri St.
