The Southern Illinois University volleyball team dropped a three-set decision (16-25, 21-25, 13-25) to the UC San Diego Tritons Friday afternoon on day one of the Colonel Classic, hosted by Nicholls.
The Salukis struggled with the Tritons front line defense, as UC Davis tallied 10.0 blocks and held Southern to a .134 hitting percentage. The Tritons, on the other hand, hit .325 and hit over .300 in two of its three set wins.
Southern got out to an early lead in the first set thanks to a three-point spurt with Annabelle Sulish at the service line that put SIU ahead 8-5. The Tritons returned the favor and used four-straight points to take a 9-8 lead. After the two sides traded points, UC Davis broke an 11-all tie with seven of the next nine points to open up a five point advantage (18-13) and cruised from there.
The Salukis raced out to an early 9-3 in the second set. Southern's lead was down to one before a kill and an ace from Nataly Garcia extended SIU's advantage back to four, 14-11. The Tritons, however, rattled off six-straight points to open up a three-point lead of their own. Southern got to within one, 18-17, but that was as close as it could get.
UC San Diego kept its foot on the figurative pedal, as it opened up an eight point lead, 15-7, at the midway point of the third set. Southern chipped away and got to within four, 24-20, on back-to-back kills by Kelly Franklin, but it was too little, too late.
Ceci Bulmahn paced the Salukis with 11 kills, eight digs and an ace. Bulmahn was one of four Saluki hitters with at least seven kills in the match. Tatum Tornatta put down eight kills and added five digs while Nataly Garcia finished with nine kills and 12 digs. Imani Hartfield chipped in seven kills while Franklin tallied the first three kills of her collegiate career on her first three swings.
Anna Jaworski dished out 38 assists and added five digs as SIU's lone setter. Claudia Bobb, meanwhile, tied her career-high with 18 digs.
The Salukis are back in action later today when they take on the Southern University Lady Jaguars. First serve is tentatively set for 4 p.m.
