CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Salukis' (4-3-2) unbeaten streak came to an end on Thursday night as they fell to Missouri State, 2-0.Â
"We didn't play our best game tonight," head coach Craig Roberts said. "This [Missouri State] is a team that's been doing well this season, and I think it's a good yard stick for us to see what we still need to improve on."
Neither Missouri State or Southern Illinois were able to score in the first half, as both defenses were strong through the opening 45 minutes.Â
The Salukis' best chance came in the first five minutes of the second half, with junior Sam Dodd just missing the top of the cross bar to keep the score level at 0-0.Â
Missouri State found the breakthrough in the 71st minute, with Hailey Chambliss giving the Bears a 1-0 lead. In the 84th minute, Chambliss scored again to extend the lead to 2-0, which would end up being the final score.Â
Southern Illinois is now 4-3-2 overall and 1-1-1 in conference play, and the loss is the Salukis' first since Aug. 25 at Missouri. The six-game unbeaten streak was the longest in program history.Â
The Salukis will visit Evansville in their next match on Sunday, Oct. 2, at 1 p.m.
