
Salukis earn road victory at Murray State

MURRAY, Ky. - The Southern Illinois women's basketball team (7-9, 4-3 MVC) got back over .500 in conference play with a 81-73 road victory over Murray State on Friday night.
The Salukis got off to a hot start from deep, shooting 4-of-6 from three-point range in the first quarter to take a 20-16 lead over the Racers. Both Quierra Love and Tyranny Brown went 2-of-2 from deep in the quarter with six points each.
Murray State got back-on-track in the second quarter, out-scoring SIU, 24-14, in the quarter. The Racers led 40-34 at the end of the first half, shooting 48.3% from the field and went 6-of-13 from deep. On the other side, the Salukis shot 43.3% from the field and 46.2% from three-point range.
Southern Illinois had its largest offensive output come in the third quarter, where the Salukis out-scored the Racers, 26-18. Ashley Jones led the way for SIU in the third, scoring nine points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field.
The offensive success continued in the fourth for the Salukis, who scored 21 points in the final quarter to hold-on and secure the 81-73 win. Three Salukis scored in double-figures, with Jones' 20 points being a team-high.
Promise Taylor had an efficient night from the field, scoring 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Freshman Jaidynn Mason was the third Saluki to score in double-figures, tallying 10 points on the night.
With the win, Southern Illinois improves to 7-9 overall and 4-3 in Missouri Valley Conference play.
The Salukis will conclude their four-game road trip on Sunday, Jan. 22, at Belmont at 2 p.m. CT.
