SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The Southern Illinois University women's soccer team (1-11-5) lost in its final match of the season on Thursday night, falling to Missouri State, 2-0.
"Since Aug. 1, the ladies have worked extremely hard and have been a pleasure to lead," head coach Graeme Orr said. "I believe through the sacrifice of the senior players, we have planted the seeds to blossom in future years."
The Bears scored once in each of the two halves, finding the back-of-the-net in the 43rd minute through Maddie Schneiderhahn and then in the 48th minute after Hailey Chambliss doubled the team's lead.Â
McKensey Bunch and Sam Dodd posted Southern Illinois' lone two shots-on-goal in the loss. Ary Lougher made three saves in-goal for the Salukis.Â
SIU finishes the 2023 season with a 1-11-5 overall record, and a record of 0-8-2 in Missouri Valley Conference play.Â
Bunch led the Salukis in scoring, posting four goals on the year followed by Kaitlin DuCharme's three. DuCharme's seven goals as a Saluki are tied with Emma Spotak for second in program history, trailing just Liz Brechtel (10). Both Spotak and DuCharme also had three assists each in their careers.
"Obviously, we are disappointed we didn't accumulate enough points for the postseason and we must regroup and learn lessons from the experience," Orr said. "However, we were competitive in every game and I want to thank all of the seniors, Kaitlin, Sam, McKinley, Emma, Mia, Riley, McKensey, and Ashlyn. They attended every session and set standards for the future."
