
Salukis Fall 5-4 in Extras to Kentucky

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois baseball fell 5-4 in 10 innings versus the Kentucky during the weekend opener on Friday at Itchy Jones Stadium.
Ben Chapman took the mound for the Salukis in his third start of the season, putting together a solid outing, going 4.2 innings and allowing four earned runs, but limited Kentucky in innings in which they threatened to score multiple runs.
The Salukis were able to make good contact off Kentucky starter Darren Williams, who had only allowed one hit and zero runs in 11 innings on the season.
Kentucky added runs in the second, third, and fifth, taking a 4-0 advantage heading to the bottom of the fifth.
First baseman Matt Schark put the Salukis on the board in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run home run, his first of the season. It was the first and second runs Williams had given up on the season. He was taken out after six innings.
Nathan Bandy cut the deficit to one with a two-out RBI double in the bottom of the eighth, and the Salukis were within striking in the late stages.
Matthew Steidl made some clutch pitches to keep the deficit at one heading into the bottom of the ninth.
With one-out, Kaeber Rog knocked in Mathieu Vallee with a single and tied the game at four. The game headed to extra innings after no more runs were scored.
Kentucky second baseman Emilien Pitre put his team back in front in the top of the tenth with a two-out RBI single, and the Salukis were down to their final three outs once again.
Reliever Seth Chavez held the Salukis in check in the bottom of the inning, and Kentucky took game one of the series. He tallied his first win of the season.
UP NEXT
Southern Illinois and Kentucky will face off in game two of the series on Saturday. The first pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
